For decades, biological discovery has relied on a limited group of canonical species such as Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus, and Arabidopsis thaliana. While these models have driven major advances in genetics and physiology, they represent only a small fraction of life’s diversity and may not fully capture complex or human-specific biological processes. Expanding the experimental toolkit is essential to uncover novel biological mechanisms and enhance translational relevance.
To broaden the research landscape, we invite submissions to our new section Alternative Model Organisms, dedicated to innovative studies employing non-traditional systems. These include invertebrate and aquatic vertebrate models such as Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, zebrafish, and Japanese Medaka, as well as emerging platforms such as organ-on-a-chip technologies and AI-supported model selection tools.
The section provides a dedicated forum for manuscripts addressing:
- New Model Development: Establishment of genetic, molecular, and experimental tools for non-traditional species.
- Comparative Biology: Research leveraging evolutionary diversity to tackle fundamental questions in development, aging, regeneration, and disease.
- Human Health & Toxicology: Innovative applications of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) that strengthen the human relevance of preclinical research.
We welcome original research articles, reviews, and methodological contributions aligned with these themes. By diversifying model systems, we aim to foster more inclusive, ethically responsible, and forward-looking biological research.
