Kidney Disease in Older Women: Menopause and Post‑Menopausal Nephrology
We invite original research articles, reviews, short communications, and points of view on Kidney Disease in Older Women: Menopause and Post‑Menopausal Nephrology.
Kidney disease in aging women is an emerging global health concern, yet it remains understudied. As an increasing number of women reach post‑menopausal age, understanding how hormonal transitions influence renal physiology, disease susceptibility, treatment response, and long‑term outcomes is essential. This call for papers aims to advance knowledge, stimulate scientific discussion, and promote gender‑sensitive approaches in nephrology research and clinical practice.
We welcome multidisciplinary contributions addressing (but not limited to):
Pathophysiology & Mechanisms
• Impact of menopause‑related hormonal changes on kidney structure and function
• Estrogen deficiency and mechanisms of renal aging
• Inflammation, oxidative stress, and vascular changes in post‑menopausal nephrology
Epidemiology
• Age‑ and sex‑specific trends in CKD incidence and progression
• Racial, socioeconomic, and geographic disparities among older women
• Frailty, multimorbidity, and CKD interplay in post‑menopausal populations
Clinical Management
• Diagnostic challenges and under-recognition of CKD in older women
• Pharmacological considerations: dosing, toxicity, and drug–hormone interactions
• Management of hypertension, diabetic kidney disease, and electrolyte disorders after menopause
Therapeutic Approaches
• Role of hormone replacement therapy in renal health
• Novel renoprotective interventions tailored to older women
• Lifestyle, nutrition, and preventive nephrology strategies
Reproductive Aging & Kidney Outcomes
• Early menopause and risk of CKD
• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) transitioning into post‑menopausal kidney risk
• Pregnancy‑related kidney events with long‑term consequences in older age
Transplantation & dialysis
• Sex‑specific differences in access to transplantation for older women
• Outcomes and support needs for post‑menopausal women on dialysis
