Abstract

Home hemodialysis: a pioneering experience In August 2014, the first Home Hemodialysis (HHD) program started in Campania. Two patients, who previously underwent standard hemodialysis, started home hemodialysis through the Short Daily Home Hemodialysis (SDHHD) program. This methodology consists of five/six treatments per week for a period of about 2.5 hours using the portable cycler NxStage System One. Prof. Bruno Memoli† and I decided to start this project because we believed that it was important to give the patients the possibility to choose a dialysis treatment that offers an improved quality of life and better clinical outcomes. Today HHD uses simplified and much safer devices and allows to reduce the costs of hemodialysis in many ways. The results of our experience are promising and the introduction of this program can offer to patients an additional treatment option that best suits their needs and that is associated with a greater sense of freedom and well-being.
