Carlo Alfieri is Associate Professor of Nephrology at the University of Milan and a Transplant Nephrologist at the Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan. He earned his medical degree from Sapienza University of Rome and completed his specialization in Nephrology at the University of Milan, graduating with honors.
His clinical and research activities focus on chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and particularly kidney transplantation, with a special interest in transplant-related complications, immunosuppressive therapy, and post-transplant metabolic and cardiovascular risk. He is also actively involved in the diagnosis and management of CKD-MBD and vascular calcifications. His basic research includes experimental models of nephropathy and the study of novel biomarkers such as Periostin and DDR-.

Prof. Alfieri is Principal or Co-Principal Investigator in several nationally and internationally funded projects, including PRIN and PNRR grants. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and serves as reviewer for high-impact journals in nephrology and transplantation, including JASN, Kidney International, CJASN, and American Journal of Transplantation. He is Associate Editor for Frontiers in Nephrology and a board member for International Urology and Nephrology and NDT Educational.
He is an active member of ERA, ASN, ISN, and the ERA CKD-MBD Working Group. Since 2024, he also serves on the board of the Young Nephrologists Network of the International Society of Nephrology. Dr. Alfieri regularly lectures at national and international meetings and contributes to the academic training of medical and nephrology students at the University of Milan.
