Carla Montesano is Associate Professor of General Pathology and Immunology at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and Chair holder of the UNESCO Interdisciplinary Chair in Biotechnology and Bioethics.
She has a long and specific research experience in the field of immunology, particularly in host-pathogen interaction. She has also focused her activities on the effects of plant-food compounds, such as microRNAs and extracellular vesicles microRNAs, on human health (infectious diseases, inflammation and cancer) to investigate their potential application as immunomodulators.
She has been collaborating with African research institutes and universities on research projects related to infectious diseases such as AIDS, Ebola and COVID-19 for some time.
She has been Coordinator and Principal Investigator of several projects funded by Horizon 2020 and Horizon Programs of European Commission, among them the STEPCHANGE Project, a Citizen Science Initiative for Infectious disease outbreak preparedness.
