It is with great honor and enthusiasm that I take on the role of Editor-in-Chief of GCND, the Giornale di Clinica Nefrologica e Dialisi. As an Associate Professor of Nephrology at the University of Milan, my career has been dedicated to advancing research, clinical practice, and patient care in nephrology, dialysis, and kidney transplantation. I step into this role with a clear vision: to foster an international, high-impact, and multidisciplinary journal that reflects the dynamic evolution of nephrology.

This editorial is written in English as a deliberate choice, in line with my commitment to making GCND a truly global platform. One of the primary goals of my tenure is to enhance the Journal’s international visibility and reach, ensuring it serves as a reference point for nephrologists, dialysis specialists, and kidney transplant professionals worldwide. In this context, I am proud to highlight that, as of 2024, our Journal has been indexed in Scopus, marking a significant milestone in its academic and scientific recognition.

Acknowledging the past, building the future

Before outlining our vision for the future, I must extend my deepest gratitude to Marco Lombardi, who is stepping down after nearly 30 years of extraordinary dedication. Marco has been instrumental in shaping the identity and success of the Journal, leading with unparalleled commitment and innovation. His tenure has seen the Journal grow substantially, not only in scientific relevance but also in terms of its multidisciplinary approach and engagement with the broader nephrology community. On behalf of all our readers, authors, and collaborators, thank you, Marco, for your invaluable contributions, friendship, and exemplary leadership.

Moving forward, my vision for the Journal is driven by three key principles: internationalization, scientific excellence, and inclusivity. The Journal will continue to welcome high-quality contributions from researchers worldwide, with a particular focus on advancing knowledge in chronic kidney disease (CKD), dialysis therapies, transplantation, cardio-renal syndromes, and acute kidney injury. Additionally, we will expand our editorial scope to integrate crucial areas such as epidemiology, gender nephrology, and preventive medicine, recognizing their growing relevance in modern nephrology.

Expanding multidisciplinary and patient-centered approaches

We recognize that nephrology is not only a physician-driven field but also a discipline that benefits significantly from the expertise of nurses, allied healthcare professionals, and patient associations. As part of this commitment to inclusivity, we are introducing a new section dedicated to Narrative Nephrology, developed in collaboration with ANED APS, which will provide a unique space for patients to share their experiences and perspectives on living with kidney disease.

Additionally, the Journal aims to be at the forefront of technological and digital advancements in nephrology. With the increasing role of big data, predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and telemedicine, we seek to highlight research that bridges clinical practice with emerging digital tools, ensuring nephrology continues to evolve alongside medical innovation.

A call for global engagement

To further strengthen its international impact, the Giornale di Clinica Nefrologica e Dialisi will continue to encourage manuscript submissions in English while also considering high-quality articles in Italian. By maintaining a rigorous peer-review process and fostering collaboration across disciplines, we aim to elevate the Journal’s standing in the global scientific community.

I warmly invite all authors, reviewers, and readers to actively engage with the Journal. Your insights, contributions, and feedback are essential in shaping the future of Nephrological and Dialysis Techniques. I am fully available for comments, suggestions, or inquiries and can be reached by email at carlo.alfieri1@gmail.com.

Together, let us continue to advance the Giornale di Clinica Nefrologica e Dialisi, ensuring scientific discovery translates into meaningful improvements in patient care.
